The Pearl Harbor Naval Complex is located in the southern portion of the Ewa Plain, approximately 5.8 miles northwest of downtown Honolulu. The Waipio and Pearl City Peninsulas separate Pearl Harbor into three distinct lochs, named West Loch, Middle Loch, and East Loch. The Pearl Harbor Naval Complex includes land along the eastern and southern shorelines of East Loch, inland areas along the H-1 Freeway, Ford Island and outlying areas including Red Hill, Pearl City Peninsula, Manana Storage, Pearl City Junction, and the Ewa Drum Filling and Fuel Storage area.
The Pearl Harbor Naval Complex is an outgrowth of more than 100 years of peace and war time development. Extensive improvements to the Pearl Harbor area began in 1908 when the entrance to the harbor was dredged to construct a channel of sufficient depth to allow passage of the "largest of ships". Since then, ship repair has been conducted, and shoreside facilities and wharves have been constructed, expanded, and improved to meet the changing needs of the U.S. Fleet. These changes have included the addition of facilities for fuel storage, handling, transfer, and recycling, as well as facilities for the operation, maintenance, and support of the complex.
