Fleet Training Center, San Diego was established on February 20, 1946. Initial courses included Firefighting and Damage Control, Torpedo Training, Radio and Communications Equipment Maintenance, and Diesel Engineering. Throughout the years many Navy Schools were transferred to Fleet Training Center from other training commands. During the late 1970's and early 1980's this growth necessitated the relocation of FTC from Naval Station's waterfront to its present campus east of Harbor Drive.
Fleet Training Center's expansion continued in the 1990's. An environmentally safe, state-of-the-art Firefighting and Damage Control complex was completed in February 1996. In March 1997, a three-story training facility that houses Mess Management Specialist, Interior Communication, and Air Conditioning and Refrigeration courses opened, Most recently, in 1999, the Local Training Authority relocated to FTC campus. The LTA concept is CNET's initiative to provide cost-effective formal and informal training in Fleet concentration areas (FCAs) by using local nontraditional training sites (NTTS).
Today, the campus of Fleet Training center is comprised of nine buildings. Training Departments include Navy Programs, Operations Weapons, Firefighting and Damage Control, Electronics, Supply, Engineering, Naval Reserve and the Local Training Authority. FTC also provides pre-commissioning support for personnel assigned to new construction ships.
Today, our professional staff of 15 officers, 463 enlisted, 44 civilian and 90 contracted personnel teach 171 different courses to over 28,000 sailors a year.
