Following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, Andrews supported relief efforts at the Pentagon, and deployed engineers, security forces and other personnel to key locations around the world in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The 89th Airlift Wing's aircraft also transported former Presidents Ford, Carter, Bush, and Clinton to and from memorial services for the World Trade Center victims.
In 2002, Andrews conducted an around-the-world mission for the U.S. Secretary of State, to include the first-ever special air mission into Pakistan.
In December 2002, Andrews welcomed it newest aircraft into its family. The C-40B (a Boeing 737) is designed primarily to transport the Armed Forces combatant commanders. The C-40 flew its first combat mission on Apr. 11, 2003, transporting Army Gen. Tommy Franks, Central Command Commander, from Qatar to Afghanistan and back.
Now in its 60th year, Andrews continues to be one of the most significant military installations, and is playing a pivotal role in supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. In one of the most visible stories of the year, on Apr. 12, 2003, Andrews welcomed former prisoner of war, Private First Class Jessica Lynch, back onto American soil. Lynch was the American prisoner of war rescued by Special Forces on April 1 from an Iraqi hospital. She arrived at Andrews AFB onboard a C-17 in transit to Walter Reed Army Medical Center for further treatment.
Andrews AFB has evolved from the muddy fields and wooden buildings of the 1940s to become one of the most modern bases in the Air Force. With more than 10 AMC units, 40 tenant units and the Naval Air Facility housed on the base, we're a busy community proud of our history and looking forward to the future.
